Moving, emotional and reminiscent describe the Burke County Memorial Service at the Foothills Higher Education Conference Center in Morganton on Monday. More than 200 veterans and guests turned out for the annual event which memorialized military members who fought, bled and died throughout our Country's history to protect our freedoms and to assuse that no force on earth will those freedoms from us....Keynote speaker was retired 1st Sgt.Wayne Rodgers, who called upon those present to look to the past and the future and revere our freedom and pay homage to those who sacrificed their all to protect our freedom. He pointed to those who valued life, but were willing to give their own life in defense of their country. The video and song titled "Angel Flight"was shown as a moving reminder of those who have fallen in battle. Angel Flight is the plane that transports the bodies of fallen heroes back home for burial. The service also featured a POW-MIA Recognition, explaining the empty chair, the tablecloth, a rose, red ribbon, candle, and Sam Tate. There was a Quilt of Valor Presentation, the laying of the memorial wreath, the playing of taps and the retiring of colors. Coordinating the event were Burke County Senior Services, Table Rock Detachment 1197 of the Marines Corps League and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Boy Scout Troop 197 and Pack 219 of Glen Alpine.
The 2016 Caldwell County Excellence in Education Award Winners were announced Thursday at a program and reception sponsored in part by the Education Foundation Inc. of Caldwell County. This year's winners include:

Memorial Day activities begin this morning at 11 in the Foothills Higher Education Center, 2128 South Sterling Street in Morganton. Coffee and cookies will be provided before the service. VFW Table Rock Post will serve a complimentary meal immediately following the program.
The City of Morganton announced that NC native Brian Benton will serve as its new Parks and Recreation Director. Benton, who grew up north of Wilmington, comes to Morganton from working with the Town of Jupiter, a community of 50,000 adjacent to West Palm Beach. Benton filled various positions in Jupiter including Recreation Supervisor for the past 3 years. Benton feels that Morganton has a great recreation program and is excited about going through a master plan process to get input from the community. Benton will begin June 27th. His family includes his wife Christin, along with his 4 year old son Conner, and 4 month old daughter Payson.
Due to a water break at the Caldwell County Detention Center, the inmate population has been relocated to surrounding facilities until the problem can be fixed. Law Enforcement Agencies within Caldwell County are under normal operation and this does not effect the safety of the public. Normal operations should resume in a few days. Two suspects attempt to rid themselves of drugs at a Catawba County motel. Hickory Police arrested two men after discovering drugs inside a room at the Quality Suites on 13th Avenue Drive SE. Charged were 58 year old Dennis James McElrath of Hickory and 23 year old Ty'Shon Lamonte Chisholm of Conover. Police reports state officers noticed a smell of marijuana coming from the room while on foot patrol. Officers observed a toilet flushing as they entered the room; but were able to retrieve a plastic bag containing 1.9 grams of cocaine.
A McDowell County man, found in his vehicle slumped over the wheel, is charged in connection with four breakins. The McDowell County Sheriff's Office Thursday, charged 33 year old Gary Justin Morganton of Marion with multiple breakin counts. On May 8th, Morgan went a residential break-in spree, entering four houses and stealing property and attempting to enter another. Marion Police Officers and Highway Patrol Troopers on May 9th in reference to a man slumped over a wheel of his vehicle at the Exxon station next to Love's Truck Stop. They found Morgan as well as some stolen property. In the attempted entry to a home, one of the victim's neighbors confronted Morgan and took photos of him and his vehicle. The majority of stolen property has been recovered.
Burke County citizens are reminded that parking is not allowed along the stretch of North Powerhouse Road. Many people violate these no parking zones weekly, if not daily, to partake in suumer heat relief in Lake james, according to the Burke County Sheriff's Office. The stretch of North Powerhouse Road runs about two miles from Benfield's Landing Road to Laurel Ridge Court and is clearly marked with "No Parking Anytime" fixed signs on both sides of the roadway. Vehicles have been found by patrol officers to be impeding the flow of traffic and in fact in the roadway in these blind dangerous curves. These violations can lead to traffic accidents and possible injuries. These no parking zones will be enforced. If the owner/operator of the vehicle is not located for removal of the vehicle in a timely manner, it will be towed at the registered owners's expense.
The Catawba County Public Health Farmers Market is returning for its fourth year, but the market will begin an hour earlier than last year. With weather permitting, the public farmers maket will run on Thursdays from 10am-1pm, from June 2nd to the end of September. The goal of the market is to increase individual and community health by increasing access to healthy, fresh fruits and vegatables. In partnership with the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, WIC clients receive Farmers Market Nutritional Program vouchers when available to supplement their WIC food benefits with fresh, local produce during the summer months. The market is open to the public. Cash and debit cards are accepted as well as EBT, WIC, and senior farmers market vouchers.

One stop early voting for the June 7th primary begins today and ends Saturday June 4th. Some counties may not be open on the first Saturday, or Monday May 30th (Memorial Day). The regular deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail for the June 7th primary is Tuesday May 31st. Primary Election Day is Tuesday June 7th will polla opening at 6:30am and closing at 7:30pm.
An Alexander County woman has been charged with second degree murder in the death of her 4 day old infant. According to WSOC-TV 22 year old Aishia Marie Pacheco was charged Tuesday. Officials went to the home just before 6:15am. WSOC reports that the Alexander County Sheriff's Office states that Pacheco smothered her infant son. An autopsy is scheduled at the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.
A 49 year old Hickory man was sentenced to serve 13 to 17 years in prison following his guilty plea Wednesday, in Catawba County Superior. John Wayne Travis entered the guilty pleas for first-degree sex offense and was sentenced by the Honorable Daniel A.Kuehnert, Superior Court Judge from Burke County. Heather Cash investigated the case for Hickory Police with assistance from the Catawba County Children's Advocacy and Protection Center, and Assistant District Attorney Michael Van Buren handled prosecution.
Larceny and drug charges, along with habitual felon status, landed a Hickory man a prison sentence. 40 year old Jerome Lewis Mack, pleaded guilty to larceny from a merchant, habitual larceny, possession and sell of cocaine, and admitted to being an habitual felon Wednesday, during Catawba County Superior Court. The Honorable Daniel A.Kuehnert, Superior Court Judge from Burke County, sentenced Mack to serve 7 to 10 years in prison. Mack has a lengthy criminal record that led to his habitual larceny and habitual felon status, significantly enhancing his prison sentence. Officers with Hickory Police and the Catawba County Sheriff's Office investigated the offenses. Wes Hawn and Michelle Lippert prosecuted the cases for the 25th District Attorney's Office.

The two men killed from a head-on collision Thursday night, have been identified. According to the Morganton News Herald, the driver of the van, 34-year-old Rusty Jenkins and the driver of the pickup, 52-year-old Maurice Rankin died, as the result of the accident. Morganton Public Safety is investigating the accident, which occurred about 7pm near the intersection of Reep Drive and Carbon City Road. Two other people in the van were injured, Jenkins Wife, Kayla Jenkins and one of their children a 10-year-old. Another child, a 3-year-old was not injured.
Hickory firefighters respond Tuesday afternoon to a fire in the Viewmont Square Apartments on 4th Street Drive NW. Fire crews found smoke in the second floor of the building and a fire in the kitchen area of one of the apartments. One person was taken to a hospital for heart related symptons and three others were treated and released while EMS was on the scene. Fire damages were confined to the stove in the apartment and smoke damage in the rest of the building. Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by combustibles too close to a heat source.
The State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to be careful as you travel this Memorial Day weekend. The Memorial Day holiday - honored those now deceased who served in the military - is expected to be a busy one as NC ranks in the top 10 most visited states for domestic travel. More motorists on the highways increase the chance for collisions as troopers are increasing patrols on all interstates and major four-lane highways in hopes of saving lives during the holiday weekend. He is described as a white male, 6', 190 lbs, with brown hair. Price may be driving a 2001, white Chevrolet Impala, NC license plate AKR-5893. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Justin Price is asked to contact the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office at 256-6670, or Crimestoppers at 250-6670.

Burke County Public Schools' Teacher of the Year has been announced. Tracy Heape with Oak Hill Elementary is this year's ' Teacher of the Year.' Heape has been a teacher for 11 years; having spent the last 9 years as a 5th grade teacher at Oak Hill. Each of the county's 26 schools selected a teacher of the year; with each recipient completing a written portfolio and appearing for an interview before a selection committee. Heape has a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and a master's in curriculum and instruction. A press release states Heape will now be eligible for the regional teacher of the year.
A 9 month process resulted in a celebration for the re-naming and dedication of the women and children's shelter on Sunday. The newly named Suzy Fitzgerald Shelter for Women and Children was dedicated in honor of Suzy Fitzgerald who has been involved with the homeless community in Burke County for years. Members of the community who spoke in her honor included Jesse Carswell of the Meeting Place Mission, the Reverend Father Kenneth Whittington, Wendy Cato, and Fitzgerald's mother, Paula Fitzgerald. Others who spoke included board board members who have worked alongside Fitzgerald such as Ken Clark and Tim Turner.
Dr.Todd Roberts, Chancellor of the N.C.School of Science and Math will give a presentation to the City of Morganton's Human Relations Commission tonight at 6 o'clock at City Hall. Roberts will talk about NCSSM and the future western campus of the school, which was funded in the Connect NC Public Improvement Bond passed by NC voters during the March 15th primary. The talk tonight will be held in the Council Chanbers and is open to the public.

A head on collison kills two people and injures two others Thursday night on Carbon City Road. The wreck, near the intersection of Reep Drive , occurred just 7:00. According to Morganton Public Safety, a pickup truck, traveling west on Carbon City Road, crossed the double yellow lines and crashed into a van. The force of the impact entrapped the five people in both vehicles. The Burke County Rescue Squad helped to free the victims. The driver of the van died from injuries sustained in the crash. A 10 year old child suffered severe head injuries and was air lifted to CHS Main in Charlotte. An adult female in the van sustained severe injuries and was taken to CHS Charlotte. A three year old child was unharmed. The driver of the truck was transferred to CHS Charlotte where he died about 11:30pm. A witness told Public Safety that the driver of the truck had been driving carelessly, recklessly-passing vehicles on the double yellow lines, just before crashing into the van. The investigation is ongoing.

According to Jill Westmoreland Rose, Acting U.S.Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Wilson was sentenced for passport fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. The investigation was handled by the U.S.Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service and IRS-CI. Assistant U.S.Attorney Don Gast, of the U.S.Attorney's Office in Asheville, is prosecuting the case.

A Taylorsville man was sentenced to serve an active prison term of 10 to 13 years during Catawba County Superior Court on Thursday. 34-year-old Andrew Ray Jonas pleaded to breaking and entering a place of worship, larceny after breaking/entering, larceny of motor vehicle, felony hit and run, and admitted his status as an habitual felon. He was sentenced by the Honorable Daniel A.Kuehnert, Superior Court Judge from Burke County. Jonas had prior convictions in Catawba County (July 2000) and Alexander County May 2001 and April 2012) that led to his habitual felon status and enhanced the sentence imposed by Judge Kuehnert. Richard Frank of the Hickory Police Department investigated the breaking/entering and larceny cases. The hit and run was investigated by Trooper M.G.Adams of the N.C.State Highway Patrol. Melanie Earles prosecuted the case for the 25th District Attorney's Office.

Tew also has started the Mountain Crest Media Club. Club members will interview students and teachers and report on events at the school to help capture life at Mountain Crest. They also will hear from members of the community.

Asheville Police Charged 27-year-old Kyle Andrew Richardson of Columbus,Ohio with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. He is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond. Richardson is suspected of entering the Telco Community Credit Union, 36 Tunnel Road, displaying a note to the teller demanding money and showing a knife. He then fled the scene following the robbery.

A Georgia man will spend at least 8 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder Tuesday, during Burke County Superior Court. 25-year-old Walter Edward Nichols II was sentenced by the Honorable Eric Morgan, Superior Court Judge from Forsyth County. He was charged with stabbing a then-23-year-old female in 2013. Assistant Chief Jamie Buchanan and Chris Edwards investigated the case for the Valdese Police Department. Frank Webster and Chris Back handled prosecution for the 25th District Attorney's Office. In another case this week from Burke Superior Court, 55-year-old Randy Lee English of Morganton was sentenced to 4-6 years after pleading guilty to possession of meth, 2 counts of breaking & entering, and admitting his status as an habitual felon. English has prior felony convictions in Catawba and Alexander Counties.
Two area state troopers are honored. Trooper Jonathan Gouge of Troop F stationed in Morganton was named as this year's recipient of the "Valor" award. According to a news release, Gouge rescued a couple from a structure fire in Valdese. The McDowell County Sheriff's Office charged Dathan Allen Owens with littering household trash, along with metal and building materials on U.S.Forest Service land on Mill Creek Road. According to Deputy Ronnie Harvey, "DOT has already cleaned it up because they said it was a road hazard."

Burke County Commissioners met Tuesday afternoon, and after a discussion on the Burke County Jail project, voted 3-2 to rescind a majority vote of Commissioners from November 17th, in which plans were to build a new jail on property owned by Burke County. Commissoners Wayne Abele, Maynard Taylor, and Jack Carroll voted to rescind the earlier vote, while Commissioners Jeff Britain and Johnny Carswell voted against the motions. Immediately after the vote, Commissioner Johnny Carswell called for another vote to oppose the spilt vote, resulting in another 3-2 spilt vote to confirm the long term jail project was dead. Commissioners then voted to recess the meeting till next Tuesday.

A reception was held at Morganton City Hall Tuesday evening for the Justices and to honor the NC Supreme Court Clerk's 25 years of service. Christie Roeder will retire at the end of the month and her last day of court will be today. The session held Tuesday and today at the Historic Courthouse was made possible by last year's ratification of Senate Bill 161 and is the first time the Supreme Court has traveled to Burke County since the Civil War. Two cases will be heard today. Court begins at 9:30. Tickets are free of charge and available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Burke County Chamber of Commerce.
Lenior City Manager Scott Hildebran presented City Council with the recommended annual budget for fiscal year 2016-17 at its meeting Tuesday night. Included in the recommended budget is a 3% increase in the water and sewer rate impacting rate payers about 70 cents per month and also incorporates a new sales tax the General Assembly adopted last year.The anticipated sales tax is expected to generate $215,000 for the City of Lenior by the end of the fiscal year. A public hearing to consider the adoption of the proposed budget is scheduled for June 7th at 6pm.

The Supreme Court of North Carolina will hear arguments today and tomorrow at the Historic Burke County Courthouse in Morganton. Court begins each morning at 9:30. Today's arguments include the City of Asheville vs State of North Carolina, the State vs Terrance Javarr Ross and Quality Built Homes Incorporated vs Town of Carthage. Tomorrows arguments include Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Charter School vs Cleveland County Board of Education and the State vs Tae Kwon Hammonds. There will be a fifteen break between each of the cases.
Caldwell County Commissioners Monday, approved a request to fund an upgrade for the shared City of Lenior and Caldwell County Television Studio. The upgrade is expected to increase the TV studio's overall quality by utilizing enhanced video editing software, computer graphics, Hi-Def, and improved hardware. Commissioners agreed to appropriate more than $19,000 to the project which will come directly out of the County's General Fund Balance. Caldwell County Commissioners also heard a proclamation to declare this week as EMS week in the County and Commissioners adopted the proclamation.
Two teenagers are charged in an armed robbery at a Walgreens in Hickory. Police on Friday arrested 16-year-old Trystan Lee McClain and 17-year-old Ahmad Shakim Smith were charged with the robbery about 3:45am Thursday at the Walgreens on North Center Street. Bond on each was set at $50,000. McClain was also served with an outstanding arrest warrant for Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon from the Granite Falls Police Department.for the armed robbery that about 3am Thursday at Murphy Express convenience store on Hickory Blvd in Granite Falls. McClain received a $50,000 secured bond in this case. Investigators with the Hickory Police Department and the Granite Falls Police Department are still actively investigating both cases.
The Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory has selected Ingrid Keller as its new Executive Director. Keller has been employed most recently by the Newton-Conover Auditorium where she created the popular Bach's Lunch 'n' Listen lunchtime concert series and Cinema Socials movie series. Her grandfather was a symphony board member many years ago.

Public Safety Officers responded Sunday night to a motor vehicle accident on West Fleming Drive, where a pedestrian and killed. The victim, 34-year-old Isaac Tomoteo Ortiz Berduo of Morganton had been hit by a pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Kaleb Wright of Nebo. According to a news release from Morganton Department of Public Safety, Wright was traveling west and struck Berduo who was walking east in the middle of the travel lane near the ABC Store on West Fleming Drive. No charges have been filed pending the investigation outcome.

About 1 o'clock Public Safety Officers were involved in pursuit after a Public Safety Officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction. The McDowell County 911 Communications Center and the McDowell County Sheriff's Office fielded numerous calls Friday from residents who were contacted by fake IRS representatives. This is an old scam that makes its way around the county every couple of months. The Sheriff's office urges citizens not to send the callers money or give them any personal information. Simply tell tham not to call back and hang up.The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office also reported Friday receiving call from its residents with similar calls.

Three people face charges after a traffic stop Wednesday night in Morganton. About 9 o'clock, Morganton Public Safety Officer Davis and his backup, Officer Christian conducted the vehicle stop near The Plaza intersection. During the stop, the officers suspected criminal activity and asked the four occupants to exit the car. After one passenger, Shannon Lee Hodge, reportedly told officers that he stole an Apple TV tuner inside the car, he ran from the scene through the parking lot, jumping a guardrail and fell 20-30 feet into a ravine. Hodge crawled out and was transported to CHS Morganton where he was treated and released. PSO Davis also fell into the ravine and was treated at the hospital and released. Hodge of Lenoir, faces two charges in addition to warrants for common law robbery, larceny, and assault inflicting serious injury, with additional larceny charges pending. His bond was set at $27,000 with a first court day scheduled for Monday. The driver, Catina Johnson, was charged with driving while license revoked, and another passenger, Nichole Leanne Hilton Hodge of Lenoir was charged with resist, obstruct and delay and warrants for common law robbery and larceny.
The City of Morganton plans to start flow testing more than 200 fire hydrants in the eastern part of the city Sunday. The Public Safety Department and Water Resources Department will begin flow testing hydrants Sunday evening. Testing will occur from 8pm till 4am nightly, and should be completed by May 29th, barring any weather issues. Customers may experience discolored water during flow tests, however, only run cold water until it clears, if you experience discoloration. About 240 hydrants will be tested, the remaining 880 hydrants will be flushed and serviced at a later time.
Annual bike events on Monday in McDowell County. The Assaults on Mount Mitchell and Marion occur with hundreds of bikers expected. Riders are expected mid morning through mid afternoon. Expect some delays and backups during this time. The Mount Mitchell ride will continue up Highway 80 to the Blue Ridge Parkway and finish on Mount Mitchell.

Early this morning,Asheville Police reported the arrest of 24-year-old Nathaniel Elijah Dixon. He was charged with the First Degree Murder of Candace Elaine Pickens, and the Attempted First Degree and Child Abuse resulting in Serious Bodily Injury of Zachaeus Latese Waters. He was found by Columbus, Ohio Police and is awaiting extradition to North Carolina. Pickens was found dead early Thursday morning by a jogger in an elementary school park and her son was taken to Mission Hospital, where he was listed Thursday in stable condition.

A McDowell County couple has been charged with stealing checks from a family member. 34-year-old Joshua Charles Barrier of Old Fort has been charged with one count each of felony obtaining property by false pretense and misdemeanor larceny. His accomplice - 29-year-old Ashley Renee Johnson of Marion faces two felony counts of obtaining property by false property and one misdemeanor count of larceny. The McDowell County Sheriff's Office reports that the pair stole checks belonging to Barrier's mother; and used them to purchase merchandise at various businessess in the area. The suspects were reportedly on the run for several days before being apprehended by authorities.
A former Newton-Conover High student is charged with making a false report concerning mass violence. According to WSOC-TV, Newton Police received a report about 2:40pm Wednesday of 16-year-old James Driver threatening the use of a deadly weapon or firearm at Newton-Conover High. Newton Police responded and found the school on lockdown. No gun was found and the lockdown was lifted around 3:40pm, according to WSOC.

King was chosen from Region 3, which encompasses eight southeastern states. This is the second regional Teaching Excellence Award recipient from L-R's Charles M.Snipes School of Business. Dr.J.Wayne King, husband of Dr.A.Dale King received the Region 3 Teaching Excellence Award in 2002. Dr.J.Wayne King retired from Lenoir-Rhyne in 2007.

Shortly before 9 Tuesday morning, Morganton Public Safety officers responded to Gregory Jewelers Downtown. Officers learned that 2 males had entered the store shortly after opening, smashed the glass jewelry cases and removed an undertermined amount of jewelry. The suspects left the store on sport type motorcycles. Suspect 1 was wearing a dark jacket and white full face motorcycle helmet with Suspect 2 wearing a red sweater and black full face motorcycle helmet. Anyone with information or knowledge of the suspects is asked to call 438-5393. The investigation is ongoing.

Timothy Hal Edwards pleaded guilty to concealing a body during Burke County Superior Court on Monday and was given an active prison sentence. Edwards was involved in concealing the body of 39-year-old Leslie Renee Hensley after she was shot and killed by Michael Lee Shuping in April 2015. Edwards and Shuping dumped Hensley's body down an embankment off a dirt road in Rutherford County. Shuping later confessed, implicating Edwards in his involvement. Shuping pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and concealing a death during Burke County Superior Court last week and was sentenced to 10-14 years in prison.

The McDowell County Sheriff's Office Tuesday, charged 34-year-old Elisha Dawn Presnell and 31-year-old Kenneth Chad Presnell, with misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. Their two children - 9-year old and 1-year-old boys - tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana.

A McDowell Forest Service Officer wins national recognition. From some 550 personnel nationwide, US Forest Service Officer Wade Keener of McDowell County has been named "Officer of the Year." Keener serves as the sole authority of over 192,000 acres in the Grandfather Ranger District of the Pisgah National Forest - the area coverning five counties and over 300 miles of trails including those in the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. At a recent ceremony in Washington, DC, Keener dedicated his award to former partner Jason Crisp, who was killed in the line of duty in 2014, while searching for a murder suspect. Keener has served in law enforcement for 28 years; 15 of those with the US Forest Service.

The Honorable Daniel A.Kuehnert, Superior Court from Burke County, handed down the sentence for 27-year-old Steven Kyle South. Detective Isaac Propst of the Burke County Sheriff's Office investigated the case. David Swanson handled prosecution for the District Attorney's Office.

David Swanson prosecuted the case for the DA's Office.
A new park is coming to downtown Hickory and Friends of Hickory will celebrate its groundbreaking tomorrow at noon. The park, which is located just west of Union Square, on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue NW is the product of over two years of planning and fundraising by the non-profit group, Hickory and Friends. The first project developed along the City's new Citywalk, the park will offer a cosmopolitan mix of old and new. It will include modernized Danish "unstructured" play equipment, outdoor seating, and a splash pad modeled after the Catawba River Valley. The park will also feature pottery by local artist Kim Ellington and mosaic tile from regional artist, Leslie Scott. A toddler area, music section and bicycle repair stand will also be included. Funding options are still available through mosaic benches and lazer engraved bricks. The park is expected to be complete in August.

The park, which is located just west of Union Square, on the corner of Third Street and Main Avenue NW is the product of over two years of planning and fundraising by the non-profit group, Hickory and Friends. The first project developed along the City's new Citywalk, the park will offer a cosmopolitan mix of old and new. It will include modernized Danish "unstructured" play equipment, outdoor seating, and a splash pad modeled after the Catawba River Valley. The park will also feature pottery by local artist Kim Ellington and mosaic tile from regional artist, Leslie Scott. A toddler area, music section and bicycle repair stand will also be included. Funding options are still available through mosaic benches and lazer engraved bricks. The park is expected to be complete in August.

Terramar Sports and two related companies - Trimfit Global Inc. and B.L.Intimates - will locate a distribution center in Hildebran in May. According to a news release from Burke Development,Inc., the companies operate in different segments of the undergarmet business. All companies sell both branded and private label products to prominent national retailers, local across the U.S.and Canada, as well as through many digital channels. The new operation will be housed in the former Adden Furniture building, at 1st Street NW in Hildebran.

One of Burke County's Most Wanted has been taken into custody. 50-year-old Cletus Delon Stamey of Morganton was caught Wednesday, thanks to a tip about his whereabouts. Burke County deputies arrived at a Recycling Center and saw a man matching the description of Stamey. He was taken into custody without incident under a $20,000 secured bond. Stamey is scheduled to appear in court May 17th. He had been on the Most Wanted List for 14 weeks.
Burke County Public Schools announce changes in leadership for the upcoming school year. Six schools will begin the school year with new principals - Randy Sain at Hildebran Elementary, Phil Smith at W.A.Young Elementary, Shane Mace at East Burke High, Terry Penland at East Burke Middle, Jeannie Jandrew to George Hildebrand Elementary, and Sara LaCroy to Forest Hill Elementary. Leicha San Miguel has also been named as Director of Professional Development and New Teacher Support. The new assignments officially go into effect July 1st.

Detective Jody Herman investigated the case for the Lenoir Police Department. Nancy Lee handled prosecution for the District Attorney's Office.

The McDowell County Sheriff's Office Thursday, charged 26-year-old Andrew Clifton Johnson, 35-year-old Christopher Paul Martin, 27-year-old Paul Edward Poteat and 37-year-old Joel William Robinette, Jr. They are accused on April 20th, of beating 30-year-old Justin Ray Rector with broken broom handles. Rector was taken to McDowell Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Two of nine inmates were sentenced on charges of brutally beating a McDowell corrections officer. 25-year-old Christopher Byrd and 29-year-old Brandon Montez Giles - both of Marion, were each found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, conspiring to assault an officer, and assault causing serious injury to an officer. Giles faces up to five years in prison; while Byrd was sentenced to at least two and three quarter's years for the incident. The Assistant District Attorney in the case states the nine inmates at the Marion Correctional Institute hit and kicked the guard; and struck him with a mop handle. The officer has reportedly undergone surgery and has met with numerous medical specialists since the assault. The remaining seven inmates are scheduled for court later this year.
After 22 years of service to the Hickory police Department, Major Thurman Whisnant will now serve as Hickory's new Chief of Police, following the retirement announcement of the current Chief of Police, Tom Adkins. Whisnant has served with the Hickory Police Department in multiple positions, including Patrol Officer, PACT Commander, Criminal Investigations Division Lieutenant, and Patrol Division Commander.

According to reports from the Burke County and Catawba County Sheriff's Offices, 25-year-old Thomas Eugene Smith was arrested under a bond of $75,000. He is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

A truck driver is charged with solicitation while at a local business. 52-year-old Grover Claude Gwyn of Banner Elk was charged with misdemeanor solicitation of prostitution Monday, following an incident at Wal-Mart of Morganton. Public Safety officers were called to investigate a suspicious wire transfer Gwyn reportedly made, in which he sent $550 to a female in California. Reports state after the transaction, Gwyn propositioned a Wal-Mart employee to perform sex acts for $300 and was willing to procure a motel room. The employee refused, and contacted Morganton Public Safety. The employee and officers were working together to set up a prostitution sting on Gwyn, whenever the suspect returned to the business. Shortly thereafter, reports indicate Gwyn was spotted in his vehicle on West Fleming Drive, stopped by officers, and taken into custody without incident. Bond was set at $2500 with a court appearance scheduled for July.

Officers from the Lenoir Police Department's Narcotics Unit, with the assistance of the Special Response Team, served a search warrant at the residence of Alphanso Augustus Wright, Jr. Detectives located crack cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and U.S.currency, according to a news release from Lenoir Police. Wright was arrested and received a $150,000 secured bond. Additional charges may be forthcoming.

A proclamation was made naming May "Bike Month" in Morganton and Small Business Loans were awarded in Monday night's regular Morganton City Council meeting. In the proclamation, Mayor Ronnie Thompson said that the bicycle is an economical, healthy, convenient and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent tool for recreation and enjoyment of Morganton's scenic beauty. Council passed the proclamation to promote bicycling during May. In other business Council approved a loan to Buck's Pizza for $15,000 for outdoor seating renovations. The loan request was due to a 19% increase in business since Buck's moved to Morganton Trading Company. Treat,LLC at 100 West Union Street is also expanding to upgrade their kitchen area and requested a $14,000 loan from the Main Street Solutions Revolving Loan Fund. Council approved the loan. In new business, a public hearing was held for the consideration of an ordinance to abate a nuisance at 106 Meeting Place. According to Terry Jordan of the City Planning and Code Enforcement Division, this residence has been an ongoing problem for 25 years. A motion was made to declare the property a public nuisance and an ordinance and order was adopted to clear the property, if the owner did not do it in the next 30 days.
McDowell County Deputies capture a fugitive wanted on drug and weapon charges. 31-year-old Danny Ray Pinkerton of Marion was charged with one felony count each of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance, and fleeing to elude arrest, along with two other charges. Officers reportedly had been searching for Pinkerton after his involvement in a domestic dispute last Thursday; when he led deputies on a chase as they were looking to serve him with outstanding warrants on drug possession charges and failure to appear in court. Pinkerton was taken into custody Friday without incident.

The department has been working to identify relevant family members. If you are the surviving spouse or relative of a deceased person whose grave had a vase removed, call the investigator at 757-2172.

A Padlock Order was served on an East Union Street residence for criminal activity. On Friday, members of the Morganton Department of Public Safety and the Burke County Narcotics Task Force served a Civil Summons "Padlock Order" at the location of 721 East Union Street. The order comes as a result of a lengthy investigation that has occurred at this residence in the past. According to a Morganton Department of Public Safety news release, Public Safety has responded to 38 separate calls for service at this location. These calls for service include, Physical Assaults, Assaults with Firearms, Warrant Service, and several Controlled Substance Violations. The residence was previously padlocked in 2010 for the same type of violations.
