Full Moon
NASA says the Harvest Moon reached its fullest phase at 7:54 last night.
Harvest Moon is given to the
full moon nearest the autumnal equinox and typically occurs in September.
This year's Harvest Moon is the
closest (43 hours, 26 minutes) Full Moon to the Equinox since 1980 (39 hours).
It won’t be closer again until 2029.
Why Is it Called the Harvest
Moon? For several evenings, the moonrise comes soon after sunset. This results
in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which was a
traditional aide to farmers and crews harvesting their summer-grown crops.
Hence, it's called the “Harvest” Moon!
While September's full moon more
commonly falls near the autumnal equinox, sometimes October's does. In those
years, September's full moon is referred to as the corn moon according to the
Old Farmer’s Almanac.
