A Morganton man on probation, has been charged for assaulting a victim with a deadly weapon after attempting to stab the victim at 102 West Union Street. Morganton Department of Public Safety Officers received a call Saturday night that a robbery was in progress at the West Union address. The victim told officers that the suspect had left the area on foot and the victim was familiar with the suspect. Officers later arrested 27 year old Izaak Benton Watkins. The victim stated that Watkins had entered the business and asked to use the bathroom(which is located on the second floor). After a prolonged period, the victim went to check on Watkins. When the victim encountered Watkins, he was grabbed by Watkins, who made stabbing motions with a screwdriver. During the attack, the victim received some cuts to his hands, and was able to separate from Watkins. The charges against Watkins include carrying a concealed weapon, occurring in the presence of officers, assault with a deadly weapon, second degree trespass, 2 counts of damage to property, communicating threats and attempted breaking and entering. A records check indicated Watkins has pending felony charges related to possession of a firearm by felon and possession of a stolen firearm. Preliminary information indicates Watkins is on Intermediate Probation in Burke County for felony drug offenses. The motive is under investigation and additional charges are being considered against Watkins. His bond was set at $25,000 secured.
A Marion man is charged for repeatedly violating a violence protection order. 50-year-old Kevin Ernest dalton has been charged with felony violation of a domestic violence order that was reportedly issued by his parents. The McDowell County Sheriff's office reports Dalton broke into his parents home earlier this month prompting the order. Dalton reportedly had violated several similar orders dating back to October. This charge marks Dalton's fifth offense.
