A Morganton man accused of committing a sexual assault in Burke County has been detained by local authorities and served with an out of state fugitive warrant.

39-year-old Eric Thomas Taylor of 2810 Hilltop Avenue was served with an outstanding warrant for second-degree child molestation in Jackson Missouri.

On Monday investigators with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division were called to Atrium Health Morganton.

While there, officers spoke to a female who advised she was the victim of a sexual assault in Burke County by Taylor.

A news release states the CID has executed several search warrants in the Burke County investigation thus far.

Taylor is being held under a 2-million dollar secured bond, awaiting extradition back to Missouri with possible additional charges in Burke.

The extradition hearing is set for August 28th.



A watercraft collision at Lake James Thursday night resulted in a man’s death.


State Wildlife officials report 47-year-old Edward Muniz of Hendersonville and Hsaing Tong were each riding jet ski type vehicles near Benfield’s Landing around 10 when the two collided.

Tong was reportedly killed in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Wildlife Commission who states that it is illegal to operate personal watercraft after sunset in NC.

Muniz is charged with felony death by impaired boating with additional charges pending completion of the investigation.

His bond was set at 50-thousand dollars secured.

Multiple emergency agencies from Burke and McDowell counties assisted at the scene.
