Governor McCrory declares a state of emergency for wildfires in WNC. The State of Emergency is in effect for 25 counties including Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Avery, and McDowell. The emergency declaration will help the state combat more than 20 active wildfires, including the South Mountains State Park blaze. The most serious to occur in nearly 20 years, the fires have been fueled by the lingering drought that has impacted western counties since late spring - recently made worse by fallen leaves, gusty winds, and low humidity. Emergency management officials encourage motorists to exercise caution as additional crews and equipment are arriving to assist local firefighters. Homeowners are also urged to keep woodpiles and dead leaves away from their homes and propane tanks.
The North Carolina Science Teacher Association has named Happy Valley School teacher Anna Lee Potter the Outstanding Middle School Science for the northwestern region. NCSTA recognizes educators statewide who exemplify excellence in the creative and innovative teaching of science. Potter regularly takes students to the Yadkin River near the school to monitor water quality, and she is often seen outdoors with her students conducting geocaches and inquiry-based investigations. Potter participated in a summer professional development session of E-MAGINE, which inspired her to incorporate "Engineering is Elementary" curriculum into her classroom.
