With the lower temperatures and holidays upon us, remember to check your smoke alarms. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half whenever there are working smoke alarms. Fire officials encourage you to test them and ensure they have fresh batteries especially with the arrival of cold weather and the holidays. Research shows most homes have at least 1 smoke alarm; while two-thirds of house fire deaths occur as a result of homes having no smoke alarms or none that are in working order. The National Fire Protection Association reports show that hardwired devices are more likely to operate that those that are battery-powered. The lowest death rate was seen in homes having hard-wired systems and sprinklers. Unattended cooking is a leading cause of house fires.

A fire update was given and the Rosenwald Memorial photo was presented to honor the Rosenwald legacy in Burke County during Tuesday night's Burke County Board of Commissioners regular meeting. Fire Marshal and Emergency Director, Michael Willis, updated Commissioners on the forest fires in the South Mountains, stating in the last 8 days Burke firefighters answered 287 calls for smoke investigations or reports of outside fires. John Howard, Initial Commander and John Kern, Incident Commander with the Florida Forest Service, spoke on the efforts of the operation on South Mountain. Howard told Commissioners the County was receiving support from various states across the country such as Pennsylvania and Alaska, but due to the 8 large fires in WNC, they are still trying to get more resources. According to Kern, the fire cost to date is $250,000. The major areas of concern are where the fires are moving to the north, east, and west into the game lands. Regional historian from Raleigh, Chris Robertson presented the Rosenwald Memorial photo and gave a history of the 5 Rosenwald schools built in Burke County to celebrate National Education Week. The Rosenwald photo pictures the last standing Rosenwald School in Burke County, the Canal Corpening Rosenwald School. Governor McCrory declares a state of emergency for wildfires in WNC. The State of Emergency is in effect for 25 counties including Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Avery, and McDowell. The emergency declaration will help the state combat more than 20 active wildfires, including the South Mountains State Park blaze. The most serious to occur in nearly 20 years, the fires have been fueled by the lingering drought that has impacted western counties since late spring - recently made worse by fallen leaves, gusty winds, and low humidity. Emergency management officials encourage motorists to exercise caution as additional crews and equipment are arriving to assist local firefighters. Homeowners are also urged to keep woodpiles and dead leaves away from their homes and propane tanks.

Morganton's new Development & Design Director was introduced and council approved a motion to adopt an ordinance to permanently close undeveloped streets in Monday night's regular Morganton City Council meeting. A public hearing was held to consider an ordinance that would permanently close and abandon unopened portions of Murphy Street, McEntire Avenue and an un-named street between Murphy Street and Carbondale Lane. The public hearing was a result of a petition from soneone who owns a number of lots near and mostly between the Murphy Street and McEntire Avenue intersection and Carbondale Lane. No one spoke during the public hearing and the ordinance was adopted to close the unopened portions of these streets unanimously. Phillip Lookadoo, the new Development & Design Director for the City of Morganton, was introduced to council before a resolution was passed to appoint Lookadoo as the Review Officer for Planning and Zoning as it is a statutory requirement. Council approved 5 items on the consent agenda. Some of those items include gutter installation for fire stations #1 and #3 and Catawba Meadows Maintenance Building, and landscape agreements with NCDOT for I-40 exit 104/Enola Road and exit 105/Sterling Street. The agreement will ensure the I-40 exits and entrances into town are maintained to the city's standards.
