The Burke County Health Department has informed officials with Burke County Public Schools of a confirmed case of Shigella at Glen Alpine Elementary. Health department and school officials are working together to inform and educate students and parents about the infection, according to a news release from Burke County Schools. Health officials say Shigella is the result of bacteria passing from improperly washed hands of one person to the mouth of another person, often through handling contaminated objects or food.
