A Taylorsville man was sentenced to serve an active prison term of 10 to 13 years during Catawba County Superior Court on Thursday. 34-year-old Andrew Ray Jonas pleaded to breaking and entering a place of worship, larceny after breaking/entering, larceny of motor vehicle, felony hit and run, and admitted his status as an habitual felon. He was sentenced by the Honorable Daniel A.Kuehnert, Superior Court Judge from Burke County. Jonas had prior convictions in Catawba County (July 2000) and Alexander County May 2001 and April 2012) that led to his habitual felon status and enhanced the sentence imposed by Judge Kuehnert. Richard Frank of the Hickory Police Department investigated the breaking/entering and larceny cases. The hit and run was investigated by Trooper M.G.Adams of the N.C.State Highway Patrol. Melanie Earles prosecuted the case for the 25th District Attorney's Office.

The media center at Mountain Crest Elementary has received a $10,000 grant for new books and the school recently started a Media Club. The grant comes from the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries to be used to buy new books and/or magazines. Mountain Crest media coordinator Christine Tew said the media center will use the money to replace old, worn copies of books, weed out books that are not frequently checked out and buy popular books, such as Dr.Seuss, Curious George and Sponge Bob. Tew also has started the Mountain Crest Media Club. Club members will interview students and teachers and report on events at the school to help capture life at Mountain Crest. They also will hear from members of the community.

Caldwell County EMS has received the American Heart Association's Mission:Lifeline EMS Gold Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks. Agencies that receive the Mission:Lifeline EMS Gold award have demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for each required achievement for Mission:Lifeline measurement for two years.

 A suspect has been charged in the Telco Community Credit Union Armed Robbery in Buncombe County. Asheville Police Charged 27-year-old Kyle Andrew Richardson of Columbus,Ohio with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. He is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond. Richardson is suspected of entering the Telco Community Credit Union, 36 Tunnel Road, displaying a note to the teller demanding money and showing a knife. He then fled the scene following the robbery.
